If you were prescribed or consumed opioid products in Canada (outside Quebec) since January 1, 1996, or you are a family member of someone who was, you may be eligible for a share of a proposed $600,000 settlement with Valeant if the court approves it.

A national class action claims that major pharmaceutical companies promoted opioid medications for chronic conditions starting in the 1990s, leading to widespread addiction among people who were prescribed them. The lawsuit also says the companies failed to warn about the dangers of these drugs. Valeant Canada and Bausch Health Companies, which sold opioid products in Canada such as M.O.S. (Morphine Hydrochloride) products, Cophylac, Onsolis, Opana ER, Painex, Kadian and Ralivia, have agreed to a proposed settlement of $600,000 to end the claims against them. Valeant denies the allegations, and no court has found it liable.
The settlement must be approved by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice before it becomes final. A settlement approval hearing is scheduled for September 16, 2026 in Toronto. The lawsuit continues against the other pharmaceutical companies that have not settled, and lawyers for the class plan to ask the court later in 2026 to approve a plan for distributing the settlement money to class members. Details on how to make a claim will be announced after that.

Will I have to pay legal fees?
No. Class members are not charged for the services of Class Counsel. Class Counsel will ask the court to approve a fee of 25% of the settlement funds at the approval hearing, and the court will decide whether that is fair.
