A national class action claims that several pharmaceutical companies promoted prescription opioids for chronic conditions starting in the 1990s, leading to widespread addiction, and failed to warn about the dangers of taking opioids. The lawsuit was brought on behalf of Canadians who were prescribed or consumed opioids, along with their family members and heirs.
One of the companies, Mylan Pharmaceuticals ULC, has agreed to a proposed settlement of $200,000 to end the claims against it, while denying the allegations. The lawsuit continues against the other pharmaceutical companies. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice will decide whether to approve the settlement at a hearing on September 16, 2026. A plan for distributing money to class members is expected to be proposed later in 2026, and no claims can be made yet.

How much money is in the settlement?
Mylan has agreed to pay $200,000 to settle the claims against it. This amount will be held in an interest-bearing account for the benefit of the class while the lawsuit continues against the other pharmaceutical companies.
Can I make a claim for compensation now?
Not yet. The settlement must first be approved by the court at a hearing on September 16, 2026. Class Counsel expects to ask the court to approve a plan for distributing the settlement money later in 2026, and will provide notice of how to make a claim at that time.
Can I object to the proposed settlement?
No. The deadline to object was May 4, 2026, and it has passed. Objections had to be submitted to Class Counsel using an Objection Form.
