A national class action claims that several pharmaceutical companies promoted opioid medications for chronic conditions starting in the 1990s without properly warning about the risk of addiction. The lawsuit says this led to widespread opioid dependency and addiction among people who were prescribed these medications.

The plaintiffs have reached a proposed settlement with Purdue Pharma Inc. and Purdue Frederick Inc. (together, Purdue Canada) for a payment of CAD $28,500,000. Purdue Canada denies the allegations and no court has found it liable. The settlement must still be approved by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice at a hearing on September 16, 2026, and the lawsuit continues against the other pharmaceutical companies. A plan for distributing the money to class members is expected later in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Purdue Canada has agreed to pay CAD $28,500,000 to settle the claims against it. Individual payment amounts have not been determined yet; a distribution plan is expected to be proposed to the Court later in 2026.

When can I make a claim?

Not yet. The settlement must first be approved by the Court at a hearing on September 16, 2026. If it is approved, further information will be provided about how to make a claim for compensation. You can register at [email protected] to receive future notices.

Can I still object to the settlement or opt out?

The deadline to opt out was May 4, 2026 and has passed. Opting out is no longer available. Class members who did not opt out remain in the class and are bound by the outcome.

What happens if I do nothing?

Do I have to pay the lawyers?

No. Class members are not charged for Class Counsel's services. Class Counsel will ask the Court to approve a fee of 25% of the settlement funds, and a court-approved litigation funder will receive a return of 11% of the settlement funds and related costs.
