This class action was brought against Ontario over harms that people say they suffered while they were residents of certain provincially operated Training Schools, including physical and sexual assault, solitary confinement, and psychological harm. Ontario denied the allegations and the Court did not decide who was right. Instead, the parties reached a voluntary settlement.
The Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved the settlement on May 21, 2026. Ontario will pay a settlement fund of up to $60 million to compensate eligible Class Members and cover certain fees and expenses. Class Members can now submit a Claim Form to seek compensation based on the type and severity of harm they experienced, and Ontario also issued a public acknowledgment of the harm.
