A class action in Quebec alleged that the door handles and door locking mechanisms of Fiat 500 vehicles (model years 2012 to 2019) have a defect that causes the door handles to jam and, in some cases, break or detach from the vehicle. The lawsuit asked for compensation for repair costs, loss of use, inconvenience, and other damages. FCA Canada Inc. denies any wrongdoing, and no court found that it did anything wrong.
The parties agreed to settle, and the Superior Court of Quebec approved the settlement on February 25, 2026. Under the settlement, FCA will repair or replace affected door handles at no cost through an extended warranty program, and will reimburse class members for door handle repair costs they already paid, with no limit on the amount or the number of repairs claimed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much can I be reimbursed?
Approved claims are reimbursed for the full cost of parts, labour, and taxes paid to repair or replace door handles because of the Door Handle Issue. There is no maximum amount per repair and no limit on the number of repairs you can claim. A small percentage of each payment is deducted by law for the Fonds d'aide aux actions collectives (2% for claims under $2,000, 5% for claims between $2,000 and $5,000, and 10% for claims over $5,000).
What is the deadline to submit a claim?
All reimbursement claims must be submitted no later than June 11, 2027 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. Claims received after the deadline will not be eligible for compensation.
What proof do I need to file a reimbursement claim?
You need documentation showing that a repair was performed to correct the Door Handle Issue and that you paid for it, such as repair invoices, receipts, or work orders. If you cannot find the documents, you can ask that your claim be put on hold for up to 30 days while you look, or ask the claims administrator to check whether repair records exist at an FCA dealership.
How and when will I be paid?
After the one-year claims period ends, the claims administrator will pay each class member whose claim was approved. Payments are sent by Interac e-Transfer (by email) or by cheque (by mail) if you requested a cheque.
Can I use the repair program and also claim reimbursement?
Yes. You can have a current door handle problem repaired at no cost at an FCA dealership and also claim reimbursement for repairs you already paid for. Applying for one does not affect your right to apply for the other. If the nearest FCA dealership is more than 150 km from your home, contact the claims administrator for approval to use a closer third-party repair shop.
