This class action, known as North v. British Columbia, claims that the Province of British Columbia improperly placed inmates in separate confinement and segregation in provincial correctional centres. The lawsuit argues this treatment breached the province's duties, amounted to systemic negligence, and violated inmates' rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. British Columbia denies these claims.

On October 22, 2025, the Supreme Court of British Columbia approved a settlement worth up to $60 million. Eligible class members who submit a claim form can receive payments from a Common Experience Fund and a Serious Harms Fund, with individual awards of up to $91,000 depending on their circumstances. Class members must submit a claim form before January 11, 2027 to receive any money.
